Adhesion cross – cut test is a very common product inspection method in the inspection industry. In the conventional process, in order to protect the product matrix and the beauty of the product, a layer or even several layers of ink with protective or decorative properties are coated on the surface of the product to meet the quality requirements of people’s daily use functions.

Why The Adhesion Cross Cut Test Is Necessary

During the product testing phase, the factory usually carries out the quality inspection of the sample surface with an adhesion cross – cut test to ensure a good quality level before mass production. Some cautious importers will require third-party inspection agencies to carry out  during production inspections in the production of products  to add a layer of guarantee to the overall quality of large goods. If the material or coating process is insufficient, the protective coating will fall off easily during the use of the product, the internal matrix will be exposed to the outside, the metal products will generate metal oxides and rust when exposed to air and moisture, and the plastic products will age easily when exposed to light, affecting the normal service life of the product.  If it is decorative coating such as silk screen printing, falling off or incomplete printing, it will not only affect the appearance of the product, seriously lead to wrong brand information, bring bad experience to consumers, but also cause loss to the brand reputation of the enterprise. Therefore, before the product is shipped, the factory or purchaser usually arranges QC to carry out pre-shipment inspection , and uses the adhesion cross – cut test to inspect the coating quality, so as to reduce defective products from entering the market.

What Is Adhesion Cross Cut Test

The popular name for the inspection industry of the adhesion cross – cut test  is 3M tape test, 3M is a tool and is now universally recognized in the world. Cross-Cut refers to a test method.  The test passes the cutting tool, cuts the coating according to the grid pattern, cuts through the coating to the surface of the substrate, clings 3M adhesive tape and pulls it away at an oblique angle of 45 degrees, evaluates the damage of the coating such as peeling off and peeling according to the standard of the result grade of the adhesion cross – cut test, and knows in advance whether the coating meets the quality requirements before the product is put into use in the market.  Once it is found that the market demand standard cannot be met, it may be treated as a defective product or be forcibly recalled. There are many reasons for the same recall. For details, see Why Recall Goods.

In the field of painting and coating, in addition to the sample detection stage of product development, the surface of the coated product will be tested with an adhesion cross – cut test, and the product with the surface coating will also be tested with an adhesion cross – cut test before shipment.  If you don’t test ahead of time, bring products with hidden defects to the market and affect the customer’s use experience, it will reduce the secondary purchase rate and cause certain losses to the enterprise.
