Chen Wei, assistant general manager of the production business department of Shanghai Port Group, said that the lack of boxes in the shipping industry is a seasonal imbalance, the previous empty box tension is mainly concentrated in the shipping peak in July and August, to the Spring Festival period empty box surplus. At present, due to the impact of the epidemic, causing tension in the industry and supply chain crisis, the bottleneck mainly lies in the stagnation of some port logistics, resulting in the slow return of empty containers.
The landing of the empty container transfer center will largely ease the pressure of container supply and demand. In the long run, there is still a greater capacity to match empty containers in the future after the epidemic has passed. Data show that in the first half of 2021, Yangshan Special Comprehensive Security Zone achieved a total import and export volume of 65.687 billion yuan, up 56.7% year-on-year. Among them, exports were 26.506 billion yuan, up 85.2% year-on-year, and imports were 39.18 billion yuan, up 41.9% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the container throughput of Yangshan Deepwater Port reached 11.155 million TEUs, up 20% year-on-year, and is expected to exceed 23 million TEUs this year, and will reach 26 million TEUs by 2025.

In addition to the empty container base, Shanghai Port is also planning the construction of an empty container platform and a sub-center of Shanghai Port’s empty container shipment center. “We hope that the empty container resources of some social yards can be coordinated and can better provide empty container strategies.“
Chen Wei gives an example, for example, the container truck driver goes to pick up the empty containers, the driver is in Waigaoqiao, but the shipping company gives the instruction to go to Yangshan Port to pick up the containers. “If we have a better platform and system, we can give him a good empty container strategy and tell the container truck driver to pick up the empty container nearby, which improves the efficiency of empty container turnover and also facilitates the majority of customers.”
For example, in the future, after the establishment of the empty container platform, empty containers arrive at Shanghai port, if Shanghai port can’t stack them, you can take a strategy to transfer the empty containers to Yangtze river ports, inland river ports, etc. Shanghai port unites the resources of Yangtze river coast and inland river ports to jointly cope with the demand of empty containers.
