What’s Wrong With The Us Supply Chain? It’s Not That Simple!

What people are dealing with is not a scarcity of goods. In fact, if prices are high enough, most goods will eventually be available. In the past year, the consumer price index has risen by about 5 percent, twice as much as the year before the epidemic.

But the supply chain problems point to some problems in the way the world works, problems that could also seriously hamper the broader economic recovery.

The most obvious problem arises in the auto industry. In recent days, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Island are approaching a state of crisis as more than 70 container ships idle offshore in what has become a maritime “dockyard”; there are not enough dock workers to unload cargo and not enough truckers to move it out of the ports.

The labor shortage is also undoubtedly related to the epidemic. Although more businesses have reopened, a large number of people who were laid off in the early days of the epidemic due to plant closures have not returned to work. Reasons for this include fear of infection, reluctance to deal with customers who are unhappy with the policy, or the requirement to wear masks and provide proof of vaccination because of the policy.

Some key workers, such as nurses and delivery drivers, who may be reevaluating their jobs, were hit hard during the outbreak; many of the more than 600,000 people who died from COVID-19 contracted the virus on the job.

And even if schools reopen, the shortage of affordable child daycare and daycare staff means that some parents who are willing to work are still unable to return to their jobs.

New Yorker contributor Amy Davidson Sorkin notes that addressing the labor shortage will require a further examination of priorities and values. Whether to do so by cutting unemployment benefits or raising the federal minimum wage, and whether to increase child care, paid family leave or increased immigration, all need to be debated.

US supply chain may hint at a larger crisis

Blaming the supply chain collapse on the epidemic may be a cop-out.

Last week, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin told the Council on Foreign Relations that the multiple supply chain problems caused by Britain’s exit from the European Union were “overshadowed by the COVID-19 epidemic. Similarly, recent storms in the United States have caused significant damage; Hurricane Ida alone is estimated to have destroyed 250,000 vehicles.

Sorkin argues that supply chain disruptions due to the epidemic may only be dwarfed by the supply chain disruptions associated with the climate crisis in the coming years. Indeed, considering the two issues together may be one of the most urgent tasks now.
