Wages Of Factory Workers In China,Too Much Or Too Little
Today, I will tell a practical case: the unreasonable production wages of Wenzhou shoe factory forced the workshop director back.
This afternoon, just after work, Li, a 40-something-year-old employee of a shoe factory in Wenzhou, saw the breakdown of last month’s wages, her anger suddenly came up. She took the scissors in her hand and ran to the workshop office, slapped the pay slip on the table and then shouted: “Director Zhang, why is my wage so low! If you don’t make this clear today, I will fight for this life to get justice ……”. After hearing these words, the workshop director not only did not give a statement, but also said: “You do it if you can, or get out immediately if you don’t want to do ……”, half an hour later, a thing that no one expected happened. The director of the workshop regretted it, and then took the luggage and slunk away.
This year, 46-year-old sister Li, is from Jiangxi. She has seven or eight siblings, and came to Wenzhou with her fellow villagers when she was less than 20 years old, during which she has been working in large and small shoe factories. At first she worked as a general worker in the forming line, but when the leaders saw that she was careful and fast, they transferred her to the sewing machine workshop to learn how to sew. She worked for more than 20 years in this job, and later, after she got married, her husband came out from his hometown and joined the shoe factory. Although the work in the shoe factory of Wenzhou was hard and dirty, the wages were still good. Together, the couple once received a piece-rate wage of nearly US$6,200 a month. The family’s three-story house and $20,000-plus car were all earned in the Wenzhou shoe factory.
Originally, after making so much money, she could have gone back home to run a small business. But considering that her eldest son was in graduate school and her youngest son was in college at a second-tier school, they were both on the period of spending money. In early September, the factory where she had worked for eight or nine years suddenly closed down and went bankrupt. So she came to this shoe factory and worked as a sewer on the sewing assembly line.
In almost all the shoe factories in Wenzhou, the sewing line is paid on a piecework basis. The workshop manager and the team leader determine the price of the work according to the difficulty of each process. If you are assigned to a process with a high price, you can easily earn more than US$1,500 per month in piecework wages, while on the other hand, you can only earn US$1,000 to US$1,200 per month for your work. There is a huge difference in wages between employees. Li was assigned to turn zips the next day by the shop floor team leader because she was very skilled. This process was one of the top processes on the whole line and normally started at US$47 a day. At that time, although she did not know the exact price of the work, she was very happy and thought that she would at least get US$1,500 a month no matter what.
This morning towards the end of the day, the workshop manager went to the finance room and distributed the details of last month’s staff wages. When she saw her salary, she couldn’t believe her eyes. A month of overtime and hard work, but only a thousand dollars! Later, when she saw the exact price of each shoe, she was even more furious. She never thought that the workshop manager would give her such a low price, so the scene at the beginning of this article appeared.
This situation is very common in Wenzhou shoe factories nowadays. The workshop director or factory manager sends the price of each product to the boss for review. The boss only looks at the total price, but does not pay attention to the breakdown of the price. This gives the workshop managers a loophole to exploit for their own benefit. This stitching workshop director saw that Ms. Li was usually honest and silent, but never said anything to the team leader. So they had the effect of holding her down and crediting the extra money to the rest of the staff. When the payroll was finished, the employees were then asked to hand over their wages to him.
Li, who was really angry, saw that the workshop director was so shameless, and in a fit of anger, she ran crying and crying to the boss’s office and handed her salary details to him ……. It didn’t take long for the boss to call the factory manager to his office and instruct him to investigate immediately. This kind of thing is not difficult to investigate at all, and after an hour or so, the factory manager got 10 or so employees to come over for questioning. The employees who had the same encounter soon disclosed everything …… and seeing the evidence on the table, the boss considered it for a long time and then discussed it with the factory manager for a long time. It was eventually decided to sack the workshop manager immediately, while several team leaders were given a serious warning. This will be followed by a reform of the employees’ wages.
This afternoon, Ms Li’s salary was recalculated at a little over US$1,500. And the workshop manager left in the afternoon with his bags when he was about to finish his shift. When the staff saw him leave, they couldn’t wait to have a celebration party.
- Nowadays, some factories have very unreasonable and imperfect pay systems. In order to pursue easy and convenient, disregard for the feelings of the bottom staff, the total price of work after the exact, to the following management of their own distribution. I do not know that such a large number of loopholes, not only hurt the interests of employees, and ultimately the reputation of the factory is not good, the impact on the subsequent recruitment is very huge.
- Workers who get piecework wages in factories must know the specific wages of their posts before they go to a new factory. In case the management staff with ulterior motives take advantage of the opportunity to lower the price of work.
- No matter whether you work in a unit or in a factory, you can not be too honest, when it comes to your own personal interests, you must argue with reason, do not be a grievance, there are countless times after the first time.
